The park is located on South Mountain, which has two peaks, High Tor and Little Tor. At the end in Haverstraw theres a sandy beach on the river with all kinds of old ruins that made a good lunch spot. High Tor State Park is a 691-acre (2.80 km 2) state park on the north edge of the Town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York, United States. Electric boats are allowed, and visitors can traverse the 25 miles of park trails freely. Other water activities at the park include canoeing, sailing, row boating, and fishing at any of the ponds. Especailly north of rockland lake (the fun part, hardly any walkers), where whole sections had slid down into the Hudson leaving only a few feet of trail with a sheer drop on one side. Long Pond, one of the six ponds at this 2500-acre park, is the place to go for swimming and a large beach. Back then there was still a lot of damage from hurrricane floyd. ![]() There is no parking at the trailhead, limited off road along old route 304, across from 400 Haverstraw Road. Overall, this is a nice trail in the woods. Since this is an out-and-back, the trail can be tricky coming down. ( across from parking is a sign for south mountain park, city of Rockland. This route is rocky and a bit steep right before arriving at the scenic point which continues going uphill. I remember Hook Mountain being a real death march and only rode the top a few times. A blue-marked trail, the Long Path, may be taken eastward from Central Highway along the crest of South Mountain to High Tor. Speaking of which had some of the best trails of the whole area, all kinds of old ruins and some sweet bermy singletrack. My favorite route was to ride the roads through Blauvelt and Clauseland up to Nike Lane off Tweed Blvd and enter the park there and ride through all three parks to either the cemetary near Sparkill or out to 303 through the old army base. It's been quite a while since I've been to any of those parks, though I used to ride in that area a lot back around 2000-2001 when I lived in West Nyack.
